The Dementia Society presents the Card Crew, a hands-on paper crafting program where individuals living with dementia and their caregivers create beautiful greeting cards while learning new skills. In each session, participants craft personalized cards to take home, as well as additional cards that support The Dementia Society’s outreach efforts—thanking volunteers, sending “happy mail,” and even fundraising through hand-made card sets. No prior crafting experience is needed, and all materials and instruction are provided. The sessions take place monthly at The Dementia Society Centre, 2327 St. Laurent Blvd, Suite 500, from 1:30–3:30, with flexible participation times.
We offer a similar program, Creative Cards & Crafts, hosted virtually. For more information, click HERE. While both programs emphasize creativity and crafting, the Card Crew focuses exclusively on making greeting cards from scratch, utilizing a wide range of paper crafting tools and techniques. Participants not only create cards for personal use but also make extra cards to support the Dementia Society’s efforts. In contrast, the Creative Cards & Crafts program involves more kit-based projects and includes home décor crafting in addition to card making. The Card Crew’s unique goal of contributing to community initiatives and fundraising sets it apart from its counterpart.
Arts and Minds series is an opportunity for people living with dementia and their partner to explore and experience art. Art projects can create a sense of accomplishment and purpose. They can provide the person with dementia — as well as caregivers — an opportunity for self-expression. Instructors guide participants through an art class. Participants receive art supplies to engage in the activity and follow along with the instructor.
