About This Program

This educational series will be presented in-person by some of the region’s foremost experts on brain health. Attend them all, or just a few, to be able to ask a variety of experts your questions.

The following topics will be covered in this 5-part series:


Part 1: The Aging Brain

June 19th, 2024

This session will be presented by Dr. Andrew Frank M.D. F.R.C.P.(C), a cognitive and behavioural neurologist and Medical Director at Bruyère Memory Program.

  • Understand brain structure, function, and the impact of aging.
  • Learn about risks factors for Dementia and ways to prevent it.
  • Prevention: Heart heath, Exercise, Socialization, Brain training, Sleep

Part 2: Types of Dementia

June 26th, 2024

This session will be presented by Dr. Frank Knoefel BSc, MD, CCFP (COE), FCFP, MPA.

  • Learn the difference between aging, mild cognitive impairment and dementia.
  • Differentiate the most prevalent Types of Dementia
  • Learn about Dementia Diagnosis process.

Part 3: Research in Dementia

July 3rd, 2024

This session will be presented by Dr. Neil Thomas MD, FCFPC, MSc.

  • Understand the importance of Research in Dementia and its limitations.
  • Learn about research, clinical trials at Bruyère.
  • Grand Review

Part 4: Understanding Behavioural and Psychological Symptoms

July 10th, 2024

This session will be presented by Dr. Lisa Sweet Neuropsychologist, PHD.

  • Recognize changes in the brain, behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia.

Part 5: Management of the Behavioural and Psychological Symptoms of Dementia

July 17th, 2024

This session will be presented by Dr. Lori Della Malva Neuropsychologist, PHD.

  • Apply different strategies to support behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia.
  • Identify Caregiver Support wellness and mental health resources.

You’ll also learn about dementia resources in the community that you can access.

Dementia Education

This education sessions is intended for people who are experiencing Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) and their close family members/friends. MCI involves memory loss that is greater than expected for ones age but not enough to compromise ones ability to carry out daily activities.
