The primary objective of this research is to build knowledge about the experiences of trans older adults with dementia and their support networks. The research question asks: What are the lived experiences of trans older adults with dementia and their support networks?

The project aims to:

1. Explore and document how the intersections of gender identity, cognitive
   disability and age are experienced in everyday life, from the perspective of trans older adults with dementia as well as their support networks;
2. Explore and document the everyday realities of intersecting oppressions, namely ageism, cisgenderism (oppression experienced by trans
   people), and ableism/sanism (oppression experienced by disabled people, including those with cognitive disability);
3. Fill significant gaps in English and French literature by making links
   between aging studies, dementia studies, gender studies, trans studies, and critical disability studies;
4. Develop recommendations for:
   a) trans people with dementia and their support networks;
   b) those working with trans people and their support networks;
   c) those working with people with dementia and their support networks; and d) policy makers.

Findings from this research project will be communicated with all participants, the general public, practitioners, and academics, and will be used for the betterment of resources, policy, and general academic work on the topic. Findings will be communicated in a number of ways: through workshops to practitioners and community organizations, guideline booklets for practitioners, community organizations and the general public, and academic papers and conferences for the scientific community.

This research is approved by the Office of Research Ethics and Integrity, University of Ottawa.
