What is Dementia?

About This Program

This educational session will provide a foundational overview of dementia, including its definition, the various types of dementia, and a focus on young onset dementia.
We will also explore the diverse experiences of those impacted by dementia, examine key statistics, discuss the 10 warning signs, and how to identify risk factors. Additionally, participants will learn about available resources and where to seek help.
This program is designed to equip you with essential knowledge to better understand and support those living with dementia.

About German Chique-Alfonzo

German is currently the Education and Program Coordinator for the Dementia Society of Ottawa and Renfrew County. He is also an active host for various Dementia Education events hosted by The Dementia Society. He also coordinates and liaises with Dementia Researchers for future collaborations. German finished his Bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry from the University of Ottawa and has an M.D. from the Oriente University, Venezuela. After his residency in Neurology at the Central University of Venezuela, with a subspecialty fellowship in Multiple Sclerosis and Demyelinating Diseases at La Trinidad Teaching Medical Centre, Venezuela; German is currently, enrolled as a Master of Health Professions Education candidate at Queen’s University. Through his education, experience and research, German has gained knowledge and has hosted events on topics related to dementia and its progression, dementia prevention, brain health and wellness and has helped caregivers by providing practical tips.
