There are currently over 24,000 people living with Dementia in Ottawa and Renfrew County. People living with dementia, their families and caregivers have, like anyone, a right to:
Be treated with dignity and respect
What is Dementia Friendly?
A Dementia Friendly person is somebody that learns about dementia to benefit their community.
What does a Dementia Friend do
Dementia Friends help people living with dementia by learning about dementia and its impact, spreading awareness and contributing to helping people live well, being treated with dignity and respecting and maximizing autonomy. Being Dementia Friendly can take as little time or as much time as you would like to give. It could simply mean that you become more aware of the signs and symptoms of dementia and are more patient at the grocery check-out, or you help promote our campaign through social media, or volunteer for the Dementia Society. All actions add up!
Who can be a Dementia Friend?
Everyone! Dementia Friendly is open to anyone who wants to help people with dementia in their community.
MAKE YOUR ORGANIZATION DEMENTIA FRIENDLY
The Dementia Society is embarking on a journey to change people’s perceptions of dementia. We aim to transform the way our region thinks, acts and talks about dementia through our Dementia Friendly training. Dementia Friendly training is about learning more about dementia and the small ways you can help.
By being Dementia Friendly, you will be joining a network of individuals, organizations, communities seeking to ensure that our region is equipped to support people living with dementia and their caregivers. Dementia Friendly communities fosters the ability of people living with dementia to remain in the community, be engaged and continue to thrive. Dementia Friendly is being informed, safe and respectful of individuals with dementia, their families and caregivers and providing supportive options that foster quality of life.
People living with dementia can experience their world as confusing, disorienting and, at worst, even disabling. A well set up or designed environment can help maintain abilities and support meaningful engagement by providing prompts, accessibility and reducing risk.
To help become Dementia Friendly, reach out today and join the journey with The Dementia Society of Ottawa and Renfrew County in creating a Dementia Friendly region.
As a community resource, The Dementia Society offers a range of social, recreational and caregiver peer support to over 5,500 people every year and receives the support of thousands of donors, volunteers and supporters to sustain our efforts.
