Activities, Support & Services
In-person Event
Music & Movement returns to the Dementia Society Centre on February 23! In partnership with uOttawa’s Music and Health Research Institute, we’re offering a few introductory research sessions ahead of the full series to better understand the benefits of the program and tailor classes to participants’ needs. These sessions take place on February 9 and February 18, with a final check-in just before the first class on February 23. Participation involves brief questionnaires and optional interviews, and helps keep the program free, supports future funding, and allows us to grow and expand Music & Movement to more communities. Refreshments, music, and a chance to connect with fellow participants are included.
In partnership with the Music and Health Research Institute, Music and Movement gives participants an opportunity to learn, feel and express music through playful and dynamic movement activities.
In a typical class, participants move to the music, synchronize body actions with musical rhythms, and follow their partner’s movements. Participants will also interact with other people and objects, react quickly to random signals, echo movement sequences, and follow verbal instructions and musical cues in order to complete activities. Some activities are structured and oriented, while some activities are improvised with creativity.
Alongside the classes, there is also an opportunity to take part in a research study led by the University of Ottawa. By participating, you can gain a deeper understanding of how music and movement may influence your own health, memory, and overall well-being. You’ll also be contributing to valuable research that helps shape future programs for older adults. Participation is completely voluntary – we will reach out prior to the start of the study to verify your interest in participating.
