Launching Virtual Respite

We are continually responding to the needs of people living with dementia, their caregivers and their families and have moved many of our educational, recreational and support programs on-line, offering programs every weekday and on demand.

Being isolated at home during this challenging time can mean limited to no respite or access to the

meaningful activities that are so important to living well with dementia. The Dementia Society of Ottawa and Renfrew County is pleased to be developing our newest virtual program in an effort to providing support to caregivers and persons living with dementia while we are not able to do so in person.

We are excited to announce the launch of the Virtual Respite program, where persons living with dementia will have the opportunity to be matched with volunteers for regular virtual visits.

Tailored to each individual’s interests and hobbies, these visits could take the form of either simple chatting or planned sessions involving music, singing, photo slideshows, or videos.

Virtual Respite visits will be able to take place on a variety of different platforms based on comfort levels and personal preference, this might include telephone, Zoom, Facetime, or another mutually agreed upon technology. If you are interested in signing up to be matched with a volunteer, please submit your request online here.

We are also currently seeking applications from tech-savvy volunteers interested in meeting remotely with caregivers. Volunteers in this role will provide caregiver respite through virtual “visits” to persons living with dementia for more information on volunteering please click here.

We continue to help our community and each other during this difficult time, staying committed to our

vision that no one should face dementia alone.
