Dementia Basics

About This Program

This series will be hosted both in-person at the Dementia Society Centre and simultaneously on Zoom.

This educational series will be presented both in-person and online by some of the region’s foremost experts on brain health. Attend them all, or just a few, to be able to ask a variety of experts your questions.

The following topics will be covered in this 5-part series:

Part 1: The Aging Brain

June 18th, 2025

This session will be presented by Dr. Frank Knoefel MD, CCFP (COE), FCFP, BSc, MPA

  • Understand brain structure, function, and the impact of aging.
  • Learn about risks factors for Dementia and ways to prevent it.
  • Prevention: Heart heath, Exercise, Socialization, Brain training, Sleep

Part 2: Types of Dementia

June 25th, 2025

This session will be presented by Dr. Neil Thomas MD, FCFPC, MSc

  • Learn the difference between aging, mild cognitive impairment and dementia.
  • Differentiate the most prevalent Types of Dementia
  • Learn about Dementia Diagnosis process.

Part 3: Research in Dementia

July 9th, 2025

This session will be presented by Dr. Andrew Frank MD, BScH, FRCPC

  • Understand the importance of Research in Dementia and its limitations.
  • Learn about research, clinical trials at Bruyère.
  • Grand Review

Part 4: Understanding Behavioural and Psychological Symptoms

July 16th, 2025

  • Recognize changes in the brain, behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia.

Part 5: Management of the Behavioural and Psychological Symptoms of Dementia

July 23rd, 2025

  • Apply different strategies to support behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia.
  • Identify Caregiver Support wellness and mental health resources.

You’ll also learn about dementia resources in the community that you can access.
