10 Warning signs: Could this be dementia?

Recognizing the early signs of dementia can make a big difference. If you or someone you know experiences several of these symptoms, it’s important to speak with your family doctor or healthcare provider. The earlier the diagnosis, the better the care and support available.

1

Memory loss that affects day-to-day activities

Forgetting recently learned information, important dates, or asking the same questions repeatedly. Occasional forgetfulness is normal—but frequent lapses may be a concern.

2

Difficulty performing familiar tasks

Trouble completing everyday routines such as cooking, using the phone, or managing finances.

3

Confusion about time and place

Losing track of dates, seasons, or where you are. People may forget how they arrived somewhere or think they are in another time or place.

4

Problems with language

Forgetting simple words, using incorrect ones, or having trouble following a conversation.

5

Difficulty with abstract thinking

Struggling with numbers, planning, or problem-solving—for example, finding it hard to follow a recipe or balance a chequebook.

6

Misplacing items

Putting things in unusual places, such as a wallet in the freezer or keys in a sugar bowl, and being unable to retrace steps to find them.

7

Changes in mood or behaviour

Becoming unusually sad, anxious, fearful, or irritable for no clear reason. Mood may change quickly without cause.

8

Poor or decreased judgment

Wearing clothing inappropriate for the weather, or showing less concern for personal hygiene or safety.

9

Loss of initiative

Withdrawing from hobbies, social activities, or family gatherings. Showing less interest in doing things once enjoyed

10

Changes in personality

Becoming suspicious, confused, depressed, fearful, or overly dependent on others.

What To Do Next

If you notice several of these signs in yourself or someone you care about, talk to your family doctor or healthcare provider.

Early assessment can help identify the cause and provide access to care, support, and treatment options.
