Caregivers of Individuals Living with Dementia

A wonderful Mother’s Day surprise

A while ago, we brought you the story of Selene Commerford. Caregiver to her husband and her mom, who live one floor apart in a long-term care facility in the East end of Ottawa.

Radio host Dahlia Kurtz, of The Goods on 580 CFRA radio here in Ottawa, caught wind of Selene’s story and asked to have her on May 4th, to talk about being a caregiver and about the Walk for Dementia. Selene brought her son Ken Commerford-Everett along. Ken’s family has an extremely rare gene that gives each of them a 50% chance of developing young onset Alzheimer’s Disease.

Listen to Selene’s May 4th appearance here:

After that show, Ken mentioned in passing that he had been trying to find a Corvette Stingray to rent for his mom for Mother’s Day. Of course, they are difficult to find and prohibitively expensive when you do. Dahlia overheard this. She invited Selene and Ken to come back on Sunday, May 12th, under the pretense that they would be recapping the walk (where Selene volunteered and Ken walked). Here is what happened:
