dementia Inclusive

The Dementia Society's vision is that no one should face dementia alone. Our programs and services support people living with dementia and their caregivers, which includes awareness and education to build a dementia-inclusive community where everyone can live well, be treated with dignity, and maximize their autonomy. We are on a journey to building a more dementia-inclusive community because it is everyone's right to:

  1. Live well
  2. Be treated with dignity and respect
  3. Maximize autonomy

What is Dementia Inclusive?

The Dementia Society’s Dementia Inclusive Training,  is a one-hour in-person or online training module that sensitizes business and service providers and individuals to the needs and concerns of people living with dementia and their caregivers. Dementia-Inclusive organizations and individuals learn strategies for approaching, communicating and even environmental considerations for people living with dementia.  A full list of trained Dementia-Inclusive organizations in Ottawa and Renfrew County can be found here.
What does a Dementia Friend do

Dementia Friends help people living with dementia by learning about dementia and its impact, spreading awareness and contributing to helping people live well, being treated with dignity and respecting and maximizing autonomy.

Being Dementia Inclusive can take as little time or as much time as you would like to give. It could simply mean that you become more aware of the signs and symptoms of dementia and are more patient at the grocery check-out, or you help promote our campaign through social media, or volunteer for the Dementia Society. All actions add up!

Who can be a Dementia Friend?

Everyone! Dementia Inclusive is open to anyone who wants to help people with dementia in their community.

“The Dementia Society has been an incredible resource to our OC Transpo outreach staff in providing training and awareness about the importance of understanding the impact of dementia in our community. Through the efforts of the Dementia Society, we have been able to equip a number of our staff with knowledge that allows them to identify and work with customers who may need their greater understanding. We are fortunate to have their services available to us.”

The Dementia Society is embarking on a journey to change people’s perceptions of dementia. We aim to transform the way our region thinks, acts and talks about dementia through our Dementia Inclusive training. Dementia Inclusive training is about learning more about dementia and the small ways you can help.

By being Dementia Inclusive, you will be joining a network of individuals, organizations, communities seeking to ensure that our region is equipped to support people living with dementia and their caregivers. Dementia Inclusive communities fosters the ability of people living with dementia to remain in the community, be engaged and continue to thrive. Dementia Inclusive is being informed, safe and respectful of individuals with dementia, their families and caregivers and providing supportive options that foster quality of life.

People living with dementia can experience their world as confusing, disorienting and, at worst, even disabling. A well set up or designed environment can help maintain abilities and support meaningful engagement by providing prompts, accessibility and reducing risk.

To help become Dementia Inclusive, reach out today and join the journey with The Dementia Society of Ottawa and Renfrew County in creating a Dementia Friendly region.
As a community resource, The Dementia Society offers a range of social, recreational and caregiver peer support to over 5,500 people every year and receives the support of thousands of donors, volunteers and supporters to sustain our efforts. This is truly a community organization working for its community.
