10 Communication Tips for Caregivers of People Living with Dementia

Good communication helps build trust, reduce frustration, and create meaningful connections. Here are 10 simple ways to make conversations easier and more positive.

  1. Approach from the front
Always approach the person where they can see you.
If they are sitting, bend or sit so you are at their eye level.
  2. Identify yourself
Say your name and your role — for example, “Hi, I’m Sarah, here to help you.”
  3. Maintain eye contact
Looking into their eyes helps them focus on you and understand your message better.
  4. Use their name and speak clearly
Call them by their preferred name. Speak slowly and calmly using short, clear sentences.
  5. Present one idea at a time
Keep instructions simple — one step or thought at a time to avoid confusion.
  6. Repeat or rephrase when needed
If they don’t understand, say it again using different words. Repeat what they say to show you are listening and to clarify meaning.
  7. Ask “yes” or “no” questions
Simple questions are easier to answer. Give extra time for them to respond.
  8. Use gestures and body language
Pointing, showing, or demonstrating can help your words make sense.
  9. Listen actively
Pay attention not only to their words but also to their emotions. Acknowledge how they feel.
  10. Let them know before touching
Always tell the person what you are about to do before offering help or touching them. This helps them feel safe and respected.

Remember:

Patience, respect, and kindness go a long way. Communication is not just about words — it’s about connection and understanding.
