Dementia Education
In-person Event
A dementia diagnosis can bring added financial and legal complexities. This session begins with a short presentation by CPA Carol Skillen, followed by an open conversation and group discussion. Together, we will explore how dementia can affect financial well-being, including managing finances, the role and responsibilities of a power of attorney, disability credits, taxes, and planning for the future.
This session is suited for individuals living with dementia, caregivers, and family members who want to better understand financial and legal considerations related to dementia and feel more confident making informed decisions.
The Dementia Society Centre in Ottawa
Carol graduated from St. Mary’s University (Halifax) with a Bachelor of Commerce and promptly started working as an auditor travelling across Canada and the northern US for a couple of years. Later, she joined the Canada Revenue Agency as an auditor and eventually became an audit team leader. For the last five years of her CRA life, Carol was a manager in GST/HST Rulings. Since retiring in March 2018, she has volunteered with The Dementia Society- helping us at various festivals around town and presenting financial literacy sessions at different locations. She presented around 20 different sessions over the last year. Carol believes that “everyone should possess the set of skills and knowledge that allows them to make informed and effective decisions with all of their financial resources. Or at least have enough knowledge to know when they should ask more questions!”
